Six families tell of their early lives in Pemberton, deep in the karri forest, in the south west of Western Australia. Families came from afar to carve a future for themselves in the small timber town. A picturesque hill overlooking the town bears the name of early arrivals, the Thomson family, who bought land in 1906. Roy Kelly has the honour of being the longest serving employee of the timber mill and the much loves and respected centenarian, Elizabeth Wellburn, is still going strong although these days, does the Highland Fling only when sitting down! Newlywed Ethel Mayor's first home was under the same roof as their dairy and hay shed and Ugo and Linda Moltoni, being Italian, had to cope with the prejudices of World War II. The Pemberton District Hospital has been an important part of the town's history and May Bamess relates amusing anecdotes from her forty-seven years of nursing. The stories tell how Pemberton people worked together and supported each other through the good and bad times of rural life. Pemberton Family Stories is about a community with a heart... a heart as big as the karri trees that surround it. This is Alison Daubney's second book of stories. The first, Northcliffe "I remember when..." is available from local outlets. |
