(A Traveller's Guide)

Desert and semi arid land cover 75% or the Australian Continent. Western Australia occupies a large portion of the desert core, accessible only by 4WD. It seems logical that to experience an adventure in this clean open wilderness is the way to go. Ronele and Eric Gard of Western Desert Guides, discovered this opportunity in 1980 when they negotiated Australia's 4WD icon, the 1,850km long cattle trail known as the Canning Stock Route.

Since then they have driven the track more than 20 times, signposting the trail for the W.A. Heritage Commission in 1987, written a comprehensive 576 page travel guide and helped raise funds and contributed to the building of a composting toilet in beautiful Durba Springs.

The route was first travelled in 1906 by Alfred Canning and his men. 51 wells and waters were completed by 1910 so Kimberley region cattle could be driven south. This sparsely watered track is fast becoming a favoured destination for Australian and overseas visitors wanting to get back to the real thing. The Gards claim the journey is an historical awakening, an immersion into the finely balanced desert ecology and a spiritual experience.
