While the Boomerang would have been no match for the Japanese Zero, it did serve a purpose, with some achievements in New Guinea in a ground strafing role. Boomerangs suffered many accidents due to a tendency to swing on landings and take-offs. The picture on the front cover tells that story.

85 Squadron

This little known Squadron was formed in February 1943 at Dunreath, Guildford in Western Australia, with a few Brewster Buffalos which did not leave Australia for Malaya. Shortly afterwards, the Squadron was equipped with the Australian made Boomerangs. Half the Squadron went to Exmouth Gulf, taking over from 76 Squadron.

Later the Boomerangs were replaced by Spitfires.

The Squadron ended its days at Pearce, where it was disbanded in November 1945.

The Squadron did serve a purpose in Western Australia and this story should revive some memories in those who played a part.
