SAS

A Pictorial History of the Australian Special Air Service

1957 - 1997

Edited by Michael J Malone, OAM

Published by Imprimatur Books, Western Australia, 1998

SAS Fortieth Anniversary

This is a book which no military historian can afford to be without. It commemorates the 40th Anniversary of the formation of the Australian Special Air Service.

>From the first chapter, in which an excellent introduction by Major General Neville Smethurst encapsulates the history of the unit, to the last chapter in which the Blackhawk tragedy of 1996 is a finale, the book details, in over a thousand captioned pictures, the day-to-day life of the SAS soldier.

Appalling conditions on patrol in Vietnam and other places, awesome experiences mountaineering in the Himalayas and elsewhere, the dreadful poverty of people in third world countries, happy days in various canteens, the contribution of the wives of the servicemen through the Ladies' Auxiliary, an Honour Roll for those whose services have been officially recognised, and an In Memorium for those no longer present at roll call, it is all here in this mammoth work, the result of years of research and collection.

Mick Malone, who edited the work, served in the SASR from 1967 - 1992, from Trooper to Captain with postings to the Royal Military College, Duntroon (WO2) and RSM of 1st Commando Regiment (awarded OAM, 1989) on the way past. He is currently the administrator of the Army Museum of WA and deals in antiquarian Military Books.

This is a reprint paperback edition, a must for any military collection.
