Second 28th   by Philip Masel

In this book Brigadier Masel, O.B.E., has gone beyond the varying family furtunres of a West Australian unit of the Ninth Division in changing strategic and tactical circumstances. He has projected the inner spirit of an A.I.F. infantry battalion, thus making a valuable and highly readable contribution to Australian historical literature.

Born in Perth in 1908, he was educated at what is now Aquinas College.

An original officer of the 2/28th Battalion, he led 30 daylight and 15 night patrols, all in carriers, in Tobruk, constituting what was almost certainly a record for the siege. After serving as battalion adjutant at El Alamein, he was an instructor at the L.H.Q. Tactical School, Beenleigh (Queensland), rejoining the unit in Borneo.

After the war he commanded the City of Perth Regiment and until last year he was commander of the 13th Infantry Brigade.

In private life a Perth businessman, Brigadier Masel is a past president of Perth Legacy.
